LUKE

NOTHING SHORT OF a miracle, Luke found on-street parking outside Sylvie’s BU apartment, a high-rise not two miles out of Kenmore Square. It took him three times around the circles of hell created by Storrow Drive before he found a spot.

The plants and trees and wild creatures known to calm him in the Maine woods were nowhere to be found. Sitting in his truck, shielded from the noise the cars made running east to west on the Pike, he finally understood the words concrete jungle. Luke took one deep breath after another, trying to lift the heaviness in his chest.

Or maybe he was stalling. Jonah might be inside, and here he was, about to learn things he had never wanted to study. Except he was there to finish what he’d started: find Jonah. If he could see for himself that his brother was okay, he could be back to Church’s Overlook by nightfall.

Luke could’ve texted Sylvie to tell her he was outside her dorm, but after she’d agreed with Jonah not to tell him things, he decided to go with the element of surprise. He got out of his truck and went straight for her building.

A girl who looked more like a high school kid than a college student stood at the door to the dorm. Before swiping her pass card, she glanced over her shoulder, staring at Luke a little too long.

“My friend lives here,” he said. “You can trust me.”

“I’m not worried,” she said offhandedly. The gym bag she swung higher on her shoulder was almost as big as she was. “But you won’t get past her.” The girl tipped her head and made a mock scary face at the woman in uniform sitting behind the desk inside the glass. The security guard had her feet up on the desk, reading a paperback.

“Right. Didn’t plan on that,” he said.

“I’m Daphne. Who’s your friend?” the girl asked. “Can’t you text her?”

“Sylvie Ellis. I want to surprise her.”

“Come on, then,” Daphne said.

It was hard to believe someone so small could push through the heavy doors the way she did, holding it open for him. When they made it up to the security guard, Daphne asked, “Do you need my friend to sign in?”

The guard’s feet came down, and she shoved a clipboard in Luke’s direction; the woman never lifted her eyes from her book.

Daphne flashed Luke a “watch-this” kind of smile. “Can you look up what suite my friend Sylvie Ellis is in?”

The guard turned to her computer and tapped a few keys, then handed Daphne a slip of paper with Sylvie’s suite number on it. Two minutes later, Daphne and Luke were standing by the elevator.

“Thanks. That was nice of you,” Luke said.

“No worries. You don’t look so scary.” Daphne was the definition of cute the way she smiled, owning the gap between her teeth. “Plus, I could take you down,” she said. “I’m stronger than I look.
